The star banner is a banner having a background of blue star remembering the wartime. It was a practice to keep a blue star banner hanging on the windows of the houses in olden days. This star banner was to indicate that the house has army service men or women.
The practice of hanging such a star banner on the window of a house came during the First World War. The star banner displayed at a house was also to indicate that the members of the house were for sacrificing.
If there was one star banner, it used to indicate that the house has a service man in the army. When there was more than one person in a house, the number of stars one below the other was put in the banner hung.
It has been a tradition to use the star for the army personnel also. Each officer in the grades of the army is given one or more stars on his shoulder to indicate the rank of the officer in the army even now.
Somehow, there has been relationship of star with the army. The use of star and star banner has become now a real tradition all over the world. An American publication of fact sheet on blue star service banners says, "the banner displayed in the front window of a home shows a family's pride in their loved one serving in military, and reminds others that preserving America's freedom demands much." It is important to realize that by law, these banners are to be used only for this purpose.
There have been blue star mother and gold star mothers organizations and the members of these organizations volunteer in various ways in support of the nation's soldiers.
